PSA is a private boy boarding school offering a comprehensive college preparatory program focusing on science, mathematics, and technology. PSA is a small structured school delivering a rigorous, innovative educational program. The first school year (2003-2004) the institution began with grades 9, 10, and 11 with an enrollment of about 54 students.
Putnam Science Academy's mission can best be summarized as:
Recognizing that educational success is in the harmony of the triad of student-teacher-parent, PSA forms a partnership among this triad, which helps our youth fulfill their highest potential intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically.
Putnam Science Academy is run by a charitable non profit organization called Wellspring Foundation.Wellspring Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to high quality in education. It was established in West Haven, Connecticut in 2000.Wellspring Foundation promotes science, mathematics, and educational technology in school environments.Founders of Wellspring Foundation are educators from distinguished universities such as the University of Connecticut and Quinnipiac University
Located in a beautiful large campus area in Putnam, CT, Putnam Science Academy is an international boarding high school (9th through 12th grades) with students from many states and countries. Although it is a science academy, PSA has a focus on all areas from math to social studies. Different than many schools, PSA offers level based classes and three different diplomas: regular, college level, and honors, which have different graduation requirements.
With its rigorous curriculum, guided mandatory study halls in the evening, and SAT courses, PSA has been preparing its students for best colleges of the United States. It is quite often to see that students get top scores on the SATs and SAT subject tests. There are students who get 800 out of 800 on SAT math section and on SAT math and science subject tests. Last year, PSA had a 100% college acceptance rate, and students received acceptances and many scholarships from the following universities: New York University, Virginia Tech, Brandeis, Penn State, Boston College, Lehigh University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Syracuse University, Rutgers, Stony Brook University, University of Connecticut, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, RIT, University of Rochester, Drexel, Providence College, State University of New York at Buffalo and at Binghamton, all representing some of the country’s best private and public universities.
PSA is also known as a school preparing its students for state- and nation-wide science events, which help students to get accepted to high level colleges. PSA has been the state champion in Science Olympiads for four years in a row in the state of Connecticut, representing the state in the National Science Olympiads, in which two of the students were ranked 4th among the students of 52 states. In addition, in Connecticut science fairs, PSA students’ projects got the 2nd and 3rd places among almost 500 projects. Moreover, in the international science event, ISWEEEP in 2008, a science team of PSA got the 3nd place after competing with more than 1500 students.
Students not yet proficient in English attend Worcester State College’s Intensive English Language Institute housed within PSA. Mornings are spent in intensive English instruction in all skill areas such as: listening, speaking, grammar, reading, and writing. In order to improve English fluency, student give well researched presentations to area schools, work with the elderly and young, and practice for standardized tests such as the SAT and TOEFL exams. Experienced in English language training, Worcester State produces students with a strong base in English and an understanding of American culture.
Not only is PSA strong in education, but also in athletics. PSA has varsity and JV soccer and basketball teams. PSA varsity basketball team was the champion of the Coastal Prep League in the last basketball season and took 2nd place three years in a row prior to this championship. Past PSA varsity basketball players have been offered scholarships to play in college basketball teams.
Students have many ways to keep themselves busy at PSA after school. They can do different activities like playing sports and joining clubs such as math, science, reading, student government, chess, horse riders, and movie clubs. Almost every weekend, students can do one or some of the following activities: going to a movie theater, amusement parks like six flags, and shopping malls; bowling and paintball; skiing; ice skating; hiking; picnicking; attending sightseeing tours to places like Boston, Washington D.C., Niagara Falls, Philadelphia. In winter and spring breaks, the school organizes different programs for its students from camps to visiting places like California, Florida, and etc.
What also differentiates Putnam Science Academy from many other schools is that it has chaperones that are college students and live in its dorms to guide and help students in many ways. They do all the weekend activities described above. They attend study halls to watch and help the students in their homework. Acting like second parents, they meet with the students twice a week to make them gain some moral values through being an excellent example, having conversations, and doing group readings and presentations. These chaperones also try hard to make students be a good reader by giving them targets to finish a number of books each year and following up with them. In addition, they make sure that students go to bed and wake up on time. Besides updating the families as much as possible about their children, chaperones even visit the parents at their home to know, understand, and serve the students more through their family environment.
Aiming at educating the future’s independent, successful, and well behaved students for society; Putnam Science Academy has been accepting applications for new students from all over the world. Anyone interested in joining PSA should hurry since the space is very limited: only a few seats left.
