Mission Statement:

Putnam Science Academy strives to develop young men who are committed to academic excellence, with particular emphasis on math and science, as well as to nurture engaged and effective citizens of a democratic world.  By providing a challenging, culturally diverse environment both in the classroom and in the residential life community, our goal is to soundly prepare students for acceptance into quality colleges and universities across the United States and to foster their future success in the world beyond.

Community and School Information
Putnam Science Academy (PSA) is a private boys' boarding school, established in 2002, offering a comprehensive college preparatory program focusing on science, mathematics, and technology. PSA is a small structured school delivering a rigorous, innovative educational program. Located in a beautiful large campus area in Putnam, CT. Putnam Science Academy is an international boys’ boarding high school (9th through 12th grades) with 180 students from many states and countries. (90 international and 90 domestic) Although it is a science academy, PSA has a focus on all areas from math to social studies which makes PSA above other schools. PSA offers level based classes and three different diplomas:  regular, college level, and honor. All have different graduation requirements. PSA school system requires 200 teaching days.  Students are required to attend at least 180 days at school . Each grade follows time on task requirements from the state.

All have different graduation requirements.     PSA school system requires 200 teaching days.  Students are required to attend at least 180 days at school . Each grade follows time on task requirements from the state.  School begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 4:10 pm .

Curriculum

Putnam Science Academy has a curriculum designed to meet the needs of all students with an emphasis on improving student achievement. Students enjoy a warm, friendly and safe academic environment where they are challenged both academically and through the arts. PSA has been preparing its students for  the best colleges in  the United States. PSA is also known as a school preparing its students for state- and nation-wide science events, which help students in  getting accepted to top level colleges. AP Classes are offered in English, Computer, Calculus, Statistics and Chemistry. Honors classes are offered in English I, II, III, IV, Algebra I, II, III,Geometry, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, US History and World History. Foreign Language courses offered as French and Turkish.

Students who are not yet proficient in Englis, attend Worcester State College’s Intensive English Language Institute housed within PSA prior to being accepted regular classes.  Mornings are spent in intensive English instruction in all skill areas such as: listening, speaking, grammar, reading, and writing.  In order to improve English fluency, student give well researched presentations within and outside the school, work with the elderly and young, and practice for standardized tests such as the SAT and TOEFL exams.

Graduation Requirements

PSA Offers three different diplomas as Honors College Prep Diploma, College Prep Diploma, and a General High School Diploma. Each Diploma has different graduation requirements, which are mentioned on the last page of this profile.

Current Sports

Not only is PSA strong in education, but also in athletics. PSA has varsity and JV soccer and basketball teams. PSA varsity basketball team was the champion of the Coastal Prep League in the previous  basketball season and took 2nd place three years in a row prior to this championship. Past PSA varsity basketball players have been offerscholarships to play in college basketball teams. Our soccer team was the Champion of the Northeast Prep Soccer League  in 2009.

Current Clubs:

Any student at PSA can create a club. All clubs must have a teacher (on our campus) as an advisor and be approved by the administration. School clubs can  offer students many opportunities for self-development, and empower them to build critical leadership skills.PSA has the following club activities.

School Government, Math Club, Science Club, Chess Club, Guitar Club, Soccer Club, Basketball Club, Table Tennis Club, Bowling Club, Billiards Club, Turkish Club, Paintball Club, Fitness Club, Swimming Club, Robotics Club, Ski Club, Photography  Club, Media Club, Writing Club, and Horseback Riding Club.

School Award

PSA is also known as a school preparing its students for state- and nation-wide science events, which help students in getting accepted to the top colleges. PSA has been the state champion in Science Olympiads for four consecutive years  in the state of Connecticut, representing the state in the National Science Olympiads.

  • State Champion in Connecticut Science Olympiads for 4 consecutive years ; 2005-08.
  • 2009 Costal Prep League Basketball Champion.
  • 2009 Northeast Prep League Soccer Champion.
  • 1st place in Connecticut Science Fair in the total number of awards earned.
  • 2nd place in I-SWEEEP 2010 (International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, and Environment) Project Olympiad).
